‘Cathedral Grove Hexagon’ is my “Return to Earth”… as I break from my recent MetalWorx. This is a dry Old Growth Forest in central Vancouver Island. I’ve never seen temperate rainforest this dry but obviously; it happens. Since I’m not a scientist collecting data; I can take liberties and i do. But try as I might; I can’t convey the “being there”…

Each to their own interpretation. As I’ve already taken great liberities with reality; I’d prefer others take it from here…
I will say one thing that’s moved me doing this series… it feels like a privilege, just being in these rare and unusual temperate rainforests!

‘Cathedral Grove Study #2′ is a continuation of the ‘West Coast Series’.
I dedicate this one to all my friends living and working abroad on this CANADA DAY.
It’s not as good as a walk in the REAL FOREST, but nothing could be.
I hope all those doing both Foreign Service and business abroad, had some time to spend with their families on this busy day!

‘Stairs to Sky Forest’ is from the west coast of Vancouver Island. This Temperate Rainforest is very dry. Rainfall has been below normal since last winter. You can see it in the colour palette. All the little streams are bone dry but on the whole; it’ not a problem for these mature forests… wet or dry; a mystical place.

‘Tiled Forest’ is me mimicking Mother Nature. I can never “do Justice” to the Forest in a mere 2D photograph! But one thing I have learned from Nature, is the power of repeating patterns. So I take what she gives me and I apply my algorithms and play on my super computer in an attempt to highlight some aspect, feeling or pattern…
Sometimes I like to go “over the top” just to see what happens;
Nature often surprises…

‘Cathedral Grove Portal’ is my bridge into the Old Growth Temperate Rainforest World. When I go into this environment to work, everything is different from my modern reality. These stands of Old Growth top out at 800 years old. That’s why they call it “Cathedral Grove”; not only is it awe-inspiring but it’s regrettably and increasingly rare! There are some places with 1000-1300 year old trees but they’re rare and hard to get to.
This piece is about being on the outside and making the transition…
